Abstract

The details of the construction and operation of a simple laboratory scale induction furnace with a capacity of approximately 3 cm3, which may be used at either low pressures (10-4 mm of mercury) or with an inert atmosphere is described. The furnace and induction unit are fitted to a tilting frame allowing the melt to be cast into a copper mould. Copper, silver, gold, magnesium and cadmium based alloys have been cast successfully with this apparatus.
