Abstract

How much will you weigh next year at this time if you continue to consume food at your current rate? How many calories are you burning up while you process your food? What is your percentage of body fat? If you omit your soft drink at lunch time, how many days will it take to lose one pound? These are some of the questions that you can pose to your students in a nonmajors college biology or high school biology class. Many students will be surprised to find that they will have to modify their caloric intake unless they want to gain weight and increase their percent body fat. This laboratory exercise in nutrition is inexpensive, educational and easy to conduct. Data collected from the exercise can be placed on the board and students can prepare graphs to illustrate their findings. Comparisons can be made between sexes, between athletes and nonathletes, etc. We recommend this exercise be used in conjunction with discussions of nutrition, digestion or health.
