Abstract

Syntactic theory in the twentieth century had a mechanistic principle : the notion of phrase structure. But phrase structure is only a pale transfiguration of the very essence of the syntax of natural languages. Syntax is an operation of composition. The elements of this operation are characterized by their different operational functions. Understanding these functions, improving them conceptually are bases of a novel formal grammar, free from the mechanistic burden.
