Abstract

This study aims to analyze and quantify the level of knowledge elaboration as well as examine the relationships between knowledge elaboration and group performance. A sample of 527 college students voluntarily participated in this study. They were randomly divided into 161 groups of 3 or 4 to conduct collaborative learning. In total, 121 groups conducted face-to-face collaborative learning and 40 groups conducted online collaborative learning. The collaborative learning task covered six topics. The results indicated that the knowledge map method can be used to analyze knowledge elaboration processes. The weighted path length of the activation spanning tree was a strong predictor of knowledge elaboration. The level of knowledge elaboration was significantly related to group performance. The practical implications of the findings are subsequently discussed.
