Abstract

In the increasingly complex world of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) the need for a system for real time support of management in manufacturing decisions has become crucial. It is observed that in complex systems the value of an integration of artificial intelligence and simulation in a decision support system will be greater than in simple systems. This paper reviews the problems in real-time model validation and introduces an Intelligent System for on-line Model Validation (ISOMV). The system is aimed to be implemented in a Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) environment leading to an intelligent management system policy. The ISOMV concept is presented and the importance of developing an ISOMV as a preliminary step towards the goal of intelligent management is stressed. Also the method for building up the system knowledge base as well the inference and control engine is presented. It appears to the authors that the described system can become a powerful tool for improving the certainty of manufacturing, to help non-expert users to analyze in real-time the highly complex simulation results and in this sense to improve the FMS management policy in general.
