Abstract

The complexation kinetics of cryptand C221 with Ca 2+ ion in dimethylsulphoxide solution have been studied spectrophotometrically using murexide as a metal ion indicator. The ratio of the rate constants for dissociation and formation of Ca 2+C221 is found to be in agreement with the stability constant obtained by independent equilibrium techniques. The activation parameters E a , ΔH ‡, and ΔS ‡ for the formation and dissociation of the cryptate were determined from the temperature dependence of the corresponding rate constants. The kinetic parameters obtained for Ca 2+C221 are compared with those reported for Na +C221 cryptate in dimethylsulphoxide solution.
