Abstract

ABSTRACT This essay investigates the experience of eight dancers who participated in the dance trial workshop of my PhD research during spring 2017, in Thessaloniki. The author's PhD research project constitutes an exploration of the application of Orthodox ascetic practices to dance practice and performance. During the trial workshop the participants worked on improvisation exercises; these were all based on Orthodox ascetic practices, such as detachment from material objects and meditation. The photographic essay focuses specifically on the exploration of an exercise built around renouncing material objects in seven stages.
