Abstract

One of the goals of the Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas brought forward by scholars from around the globe. For example, the first three issues of 2012 feature contributions by authors or co-authors from eleven countries! The diversity of perspectives offered by colleagues from different countries enables all of us to understand each other better and, in the process, become more accomplished professionals. After all, free exchange of ideas is the essence of academia! The JDE is committed to bringing our readers this diversity while maintaining, even strengthening, our quality standards. We look forward to a publication that indeed speaks with a global voice! The September 2012 issue adheres to our multinational perspective by compiling the works of scholars from four countries. Let’s enjoy and learn! Institutional Environment for Entrepreneurship: Evidence from the Developmental States of South Korea and United Arab Emirates examines each country’s institutional profile for its role in encouraging entrepreneurial activity in the two countries. Vishal Gupta, Ali Alper Yayla, Arijit Sidkar and Min-Seok Cha find cross-national differences between the two countries in the regulatory, cognitive and normative dimensions of the institutional environment and discuss the implications. Rowena Ortiz-Walters and Mark Gius seek to ascertain whether newly-formed micro firms owned by minority entrepreneurs would be as likely to be profitable when compared to non-minority business owners. In addition, Performance of Newly-Formed Micro Firms: The Role of Capital Financing in Minority Owned Enterprises emphasizes the impact of equity and debt to determine if capital financing influences firm profitability in the same manner for minority as it does for non-minority owned micro firms. Among the authors’ findings is the lower likelihood of profitability associated with firms owned by Hispanic and Black entrepreneurs. The third article of this issue, Expanding the Notion of Entrepreneurship Capital in American Counties: A Panel Data Analysis 2002–07, is authored by the team of Erick Chang, Kaustav Misra and Esra Memili. Their study considers industry growth and Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship Vol. 17, No. 3 (2012) 1220003 (2 pages) © World Scientific Publishing Company DOI: 10.1142/S1084946712200038
