Abstract

Some difficulties encountered at sea when incubating pelagic fish eggs and cultivating small marine invertebrates in running water may be overcome by utilizing porous polyethylene filters to replace bottoms in glass jars. The proportionally large drainage area achieved allows water to be circulated through the jar without outflow currents carrying organisms to the bottom. Jars stand in a continuously replenished water bath thus fluctuations in water temperature caused by ambient air temperature are very low. Pre-filtration of seawater was necessary in areas of high phytoplankton concentration because detritus clogged the 60–70 micron sized pores in the jar filters. Construction details of jars, prefilter and plumbing systems are described.
