Abstract

This article presents a hypergraph‐based conceptual data model for bathymetric data management. Using an object‐oriented approach, data are organized according to topographical features such as seamount peaks and ranges with associated attributes using a hypergraph. This makes object and topographic feature‐based query, search, and retrieval more efficient. With the contour‐based geometrical representation in the hypergraph, fast graphics rendering can be achieved by a multiresolution presentation approach. This model can be implemented using relational database techniques. Applications of this model can also be found in other areas of marine geographic information systems (MGISs) as a conceptual model or as a utility for object representation and data management.
