Abstract

Small applicators, in addition to being particularly prone to errors due to misalignment (Eddyand Stevens, 1946), make incomplete irradiation of the lesion possible as a result of small movements of the patient relative to the applicator. For these reasons, treatment of small lesions at the author's institute is carried out with a larger applicator than is necessary to cover the lesion, and a lead screen, in which is cut an aperture, covering the lesion. In particular, X-ray therapy of skin lesions around the nose and inner canthi, which are usually small, irregular, awkwardly situated, and of course, close to regions it is particularly desired to avoid irradiating, is done with a lead face mask, in which the appropriate aperture has been cut.
