Abstract

A brief hydrobiological study of the river Lieve (Ghent, Belgium) was made from 14.VII.1964 to 15.III.1965. Six places were investigated. From the chemical and bacteriological point of view, the Lieve was characterized as heavily polluted. A pollution gradient could be demonstrated as well by physicochemical investigations as by the biological results. The presence and the production of the plankton in the different places were discussed and some general considerations leading to a new work hypothesis were made.
