Abstract

AbstractElectric discharge machining (EDM) process is a highly precise and fast-growing non-conventional machining process that is employed for the fabrication of high hardness materials including metal matrix composites (MMCs), alloy of different metals, and ceramic materials. The selection of adequate coolant and lubricant during the EDM process is an important issue, which influences the EDM efficiency by reducing the high heat generated during machining. This paper presents the application of a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique for the selection of suitable sustainable dielectric fluid for EDM process. The criteria for selection of best dielectric fluid are considered as the properties of a dielectric fluid required for better machining during EDM process. Standard deviation method is used to calculate the weights of the criteria. Further, six sustainable dielectric fluid used in EDM process are ranked using PIV method. It has been found in the study that the most important property of the dielectric fluid required for better machining in EDM process is flash point. Further, it has also been found that among the considered sustainable dielectric fluids, sunflower oil is found to be the best dielectric fluid for better performance during EDM process.KeywordsEDM processSustainable dielectric fluidStandard deviation methodProximity index value method
