The well-trained family physician is a “specialist” who is highly qualified to help emotionally disturbed patients. Indeed the provision of this help is one of his obligations. The categories of emotional disturbance serve as guidelines in deciding whether or not psychiatric referral is needed. The family physician serves as the strategic link between the public and psychiatry. The basic tool in treatment is the interview. Drugs may be needed, but the most potent, effective “drug” is the physician himself.
