Abstract

Gamma-ray angular distribution measurements at several 38Ar(p, γ) 39K resonances yield the spins J = 5 2 and 7 2 for the E x = 3.88 and 4.13 MeV levels of 39K, respectively. The assignments are in line with the interpretation of these two levels as members of a hole-vibration quadruplet in 39K. Results of a shell-model calculation are presented which support this interpretation. Byproducts of this investigation are the decay schemes of sixteen 38Ar(p, γ) 39K resonances, the assignments J π = 5 2 +, 5 2 +, 7 2 −, 5 2 +, 3 2 (−), 3 2 − and 9 2 + to the 39K levels at E x = 4.51, 4.74, 5.89, 7.87, 7.99, 8.09 and 8.10 MeV and the mean lifetimes τ m = 85 ± 20, 22 ± 5, 9 ± 2 and < 5 fs for the levels at E x = 2.52, 3.02, 3.88 and 5.26 MeV, respectively.
