Abstract

BP Metal Composites Ltd, a division of BP Ventures, is constructuring two plants for the production of metal matrix materials. One is for its new range of ceramic particle reinforced materials on a 1sol;18 acre site at the Royal Aerospace Establichment (RAE), Farnborough, UK. The other is to produce silicon carbide monofilament at the BP Research Centre at Sunbury, UK. Metal matrix composite (MMC) materials of the particulate type, exhibiting greater stiffness, strength and wear resistance than conventional aluminium alloys, are being developed for a host of applications in a variety of industries. With the recent acquisition of DWA Composite Specialities, BP companies in the UK and USA are emerging as leading players in the field of MMCs. Metal Powder Report visited BP's pilot plant at Farnborough to learn more about the evolution of the company's powder metallurgy (PM) MMC materials and their prospective applications.
