Abstract

This book was written by a surgeon of the first rank, a scholar of broad interests and a gentleman of character, attributes that might be anticipated in the son of E. Wyllys Andrews and the grandson of Edmund Andrews. When Dr. Edmund Andrews died late in 1941 he had completed the manuscript which has now been published. Arno Luckhardt has written a foreword in which he admits that he put off reading the bulky manuscript for some time, particularly since the title did not portend exciting reading. But the perusal of the first few pages sufficed to impel him to continue the task with growing enthusiasm.
