Abstract
In this chapter the evolution and dissemination of written maritime laws in Northern Europe is discussed from the earliest developments in Scandinavia in the late twelfth century and in France and Northern Germany in the thirteenth century to the first printed editions of the so-called Gotland Sea Law in the early sixteenth century. It is argued that local variations in the evolution of maritime regulation correspond to regional developments in shipping technology and that none of the written sea laws which were compiled during the latter part of the Middle Ages were available throughout Northern Europe.
