Abstract

The Western Province Senior School Sports Union had its genesis in smaller organizations that were deeply embedded in the context of the oppressed people of Cape Town. School athletics was a mirror of the social and political landscape of the broader city. Despite many constraints, both materially and in terms of human resources, the organization navigated the difficult socio-political environment, largely through the efforts of dedicated teachers and community based organizations. The final organization that emerged was able to successfully manage events and the administration and development of school athletics in difficult times. Prominent administrators of the organization were identified as well as outstanding athletes and participating schools.
