Abstract

In this chapter, the author shares some of his own thoughts as he took over the whole of the International Military Tribunal For The Far East (IMTFE) and considers its inherent strengths and weaknesses. He acknowledges that there are those who take the view that in its substantive contributions to International Law, the Judgment of the Tokyo War Trial made an enduring contribution to world peace. The rulings of the IMTFE were idiosyncratic and contradictory, and although the Court did seek to conform to rulings made by its counterpart at Nuremberg, the Tribunal in Tokyo frequently declared itself free to set new standards unhampered by inconvenient, inherited national precedents or established procedures. Keywords:(IMTFE); Historian; IMTFE; International law; Tokyo War Trial; world peace
