Abstract

Sensing Heparin in 100% serum matrix is a challenging task and is rarely reported in literature. Herein, we present a tetracationic porphyrin based probe that detects Heparin in 100% serum matrix, both, colorimetrically and fluorometrically, with a clinically relevant LOD. The probe also shows high selectivity towards Heparin when compared with its structurally related analogs, chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid along with other relevant analytes. The porphyrin probe-Heparin complex could also be used for the detection of Protamine, which is the only clinically approved antitoxin for Heparin overdose. The easy commercial availability of the probe coupled with its other desirable attributes is expected to significantly improve its prospect in Heparin sensor applications and Heparin related bio-chemical research.
