Abstract
An investigation of the polarization modulation performance of a highly birefringent fibre was carried out. The performance of the system and aspects such as the modulation method and the properties of the highly birefringent fibre were analysed in order to enhance performance. An important application of such a polarization modulation technique is in a novel ellipsometer, and the use of the fibre-based system to make ellipsometric measurements to determine the refractive index of a bulk sample is described.
