Abstract

Mobile devices have been playing an important role in our daily lives. Therefore, to extend the standby time of mobile devices has become a focal topic to both industry and academia. Based on the brightness, contrast and motion analysis, this paper proposes a new backlight dimming and pixel compensation method for display power saving when playing video. First, we calculate the brightness and contrast of the frame followed by extracting the motion vectors of the video to obtain the frame speed. Then, we determine the optimized backlight level and pixel compensation value using subjective visual model. Finally, we process pixel compensation by GPU rendering. Experimental results show that our method achieved on average 23% of power saving and preserved good visual quality through the subjective video quality assessment.
