Abstract

Cantilever fans exhibit the desirable properties of low noise and long lifetime. However, current cantilever fan designs have low volumetric flow rates compared to other fan types. The study was focused on improving the volumetric flow rate, while keeping its desirable properties. Here we show a cantilever fan system that achieves a volumetric flow rate of 58.9 L/s. This was achieved by increasing the size of the fan blades, using high strength spring steel fan blades at their endurance limit, driving the fans with a custom linear motor and suppressing edge vortexes with shrouding. The flow rate reported here is 118 times higher than has been previously reported.
