Abstract

A novel flying capacitor inverter has been proposed that utilizes the transformer in the basic unit. In order to generate all the voltage levels (even and odd) at the output, the magnitude of the capacitor's voltage is controlled. Also a new control strategy to generate maximum output voltage levels is proposed. The proposed control strategy is capable of regulating the voltage of the flying capacitor in different levels enabling tunable RMS values of the output voltage levels. In addition, a loss analysis has been performed to assess the sources of losses stemming from different components of the inverter (i.e. power switches, transformer and flying capacitor). Finally, numerical simulation has been performed to model the performance of the proposed topology and corresponding control strategy under different conditions and the results of numerical simulation confirms the stable performance of the proposed inverter.
