Abstract

A study of the orbits of charged particles in an axially symmetric electrostatic field having an axial electric gradient has been performed. The results show that the field gradient parameter at disposal can be chosen to yield a very favorable focusing of the particles. The field form may be expressed as a closed mathematical expression. A single pass electron spectrometer has been designed and tested. A double pass spectrometer has furthermore been designed for optimal performance and is in the process of being manufactured.
