Abstract

The authors present detailed ideas and methods concerning the design and development of a high-performance optical data bus based on MIL-STD-1773. To reject impulsive interference efficaciously, large-core and large-numerical-aperture fiber optics are adopted, as well as high-emitted-power LEDs (light-emitting diodes) and a low-noise optical receiver structure to obtain a high signal-to-noise ratio at decision time. Two new optical modulation techniques-digital frequency shift keying and partial trilevel Manchester II biphase coding-are recommended, which are very attractive in the design of modern optical buses. VLSI chip COM 1553B is used to construct the bus control interface unit. The choice of optical bus configurations among five fundamental optical bus ones recommended by MIL-STD-1773 and the optical power budget are also discussed. >
