Abstract

The ETH atomic beam type polarized ion source has been successfully improved in order to produce high intensity beams of polarized negative hydrogen ions. At present the source delivers a 3 μA negative ion beam of an energy of 60 keV. After acceleration in the tandem accelerator 1.6 μA of 89% polarized deuterons could be focused through a 3 mm diameter collimator into the scattering chamber. Further improvements of this type of source should make it possible to produce tens of μA of polarized negative hydrogen ions.
