Abstract

A planar W-band array antenna backed by a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity with high radiation efficiency is proposed in this paper. In order to avoid large loss caused by the complex feeding network, a SIW cavity operating at high-order resonating mode is adopted for the proposed antenna. Multiple radiation slots are etched on the top surface of a single layer SIW cavity for implementing an array antenna. Therefore a high radiation efficiency is obtained without using complex feeding network. As demonstration, a 5 by 6 slot array antenna is designed with a SIW backed cavity using TE 560 — mode. The prototype is fabricated using a low cost printed-circuited-board (PCB) process, and excited by a standard WR-10 waveguide in the experiment. Measurement results show that this prototype has a gain over 14dBi in the 10 dB return loss bandwidth, a high radiation efficiency up to 74.2% at 90.2 GHz, and a maximum gain up to 15.7dBi at 90.6GHz.
