Abstract

A new low-cost, high efficiency converter topology derived from customary C-dump converter is proposed for Switched Reluctance Motor drives. The proposed converter topology overcomes the drawback of customary C-dump converter in terms of recovery energy circulation, voltage rating of power devices, dc link voltage and degree of freedom. The voltage rating of power devices, dump capacitor and other switches in the proposed converter is reduced to half (V dc ) compared to the customary C-dump converter (2V dc ), thus reducing the overall cost of the converter. The dump inductor in recovery circuit is completely disposed. The control requirement is simple and also allows zero voltage across the phases thus obtaining additional degree of freedom. The proposed and customary converters are simulated by MATLAB/Simulink package. This paper introduces the operation principle, simulation model, design factors of the converter. A prototype of the converter has been built and tested to verify its practical viability and a comparison of result with conventional converter is demonstrated.
