Abstract

Abstract A neutron detection system has been constructed to measure neutron multiplicities from photoreactions. The detector consists of fifty-three 3 He proportional counters in a polythene cube 61 cm on a side. The detection efficiency for prompt neutrons from spontaneous fission of 252 Cf is ≈50%. The detector is intrinsically insensitive to gamma radiation and has a relatively long (≈30μs) neutron dieaway time. These properties, in combination with fast recovery electronics, permit easy measurement of photofission ν and prompt neutron multiplicity distributions with a pulsed electron bremsstrahlung source. The intrinsically low backgrounds experienced with this detector (≈0.3 cps) also permit the simultaneous study of very low yield processes such as delayed neutrons following photofission Calibrations and performance of the system are described
