Abstract
A high-definition (HD) liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) backplane with CMOS switches and dual storages pixel array is implemented with 0.18 um high-voltage (HV) CMOS process. The HV CMOS switches and dual storages pixel circuits enable color filter-less LC display adopting field sequential color (FSC) method to get high brightness and high-contrast ratio thanks to high duty ratio and full range driving voltage for LC. This backplane has 1280 × 720 (HD) pixel array (0.5 diagonal screen size) of 8.6 um pixel pitch, column/row drivers, an LVDS receiver for high data rate, gamma correction R-string, and internal LED drivers. An LCoS display module is assembled with vertical-aligned (VA) LC mode and inorganic alignment layer, and it shows over 500:1 contrast ratio with up to 400 Hz refresh rate and over 90% duty ratio.
