Abstract

This article is based on a heuristic study that phenomenologically explored the experiential similarities of therapeutic performance and stage presence. The rationale for choosing the research method and the research process is discussed in line with the stages of heuristic research. The themes emerged in this study are related to an approach to cultivating therapeutic presence and its implicit dimension. These themes are discussed in connection with the concepts in performance studies - Growtoski’s via negativa and Eugenio Barba’s pre-expressivity. The relevance of drama-based action methods in the process of cultivating therapeutic presence are discussed in connection with the preparation stage of therapeutic presence that extends beyond the boundaries of a clinical setting.
