Abstract

This paper presents a heuristic optimization approach in order to model relationships between shippers and recipients in urban freight transport. It proposes an algorithm with which these relationships can be synthesized in the absence of survey data. In an urban environment, freight customers are assigned to distribution centres in a way that replicates the observed distance distribution between shippers and recipients. The result is a synthetic freight demand population that can serve as a starting point for analyzing behavior-based urban freight and freight policy effectiveness. It presents an application for a real-world case study of retail food in Berlin.
