Abstract

The growth and dynamics of ultrathin lead films on Cu(111) has been investigated using high resolution helium atom scattering. The zone boundary energy of the Rayleigh mode of the Pb monolayer increases from 6.2 to 6.7 meV after heating the layer to 700 K. A new mode for the monolayer structure has been found along the 〈110〉 azimuth. A second monolayer can only be grown by codeposition of 20% Tl with the Pb. The measured data is compared with the results of slab calculations.
