Abstract

Adiabatic heat-capacity measurements of the permanent magnets R 2Fe 14B (R Y, Nd, Ho, Er) have been performed from 5 to 350 K. A first-order phase transition has been observed in the Er compound at 323 K and second-order phase transitions in the Nd and Ho compounds at 135 and 60 K, respectively. From free energy calculations we obtained the reorientation temperatures, the enthalpy of the transition for R = Er and the anomalous heat capacity for R = Nd and Ho.
