Abstract

In the context of widespread HIV infection and AIDS in Africa there are programs in place in most African countries to address adolescent health. Most of the programs have focused upon sexual and reproductive health problems affecting adolescents both in and out of school. However programs to promote adolescent health suffer from a lack of experience about how to best work with youth. Strategies are poorly developed in many parts of Africa. The emerging adolescent health programs are therefore dealing with basic programming issues such as the targeting of interventions and identifying problems for program focus. The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) has been at the forefront of developing strategies to address the sexual and reproductive health problems of youth. To consolidate the organizations efforts to that end a regional Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) Program was established two years ago taking an operations research approach to ASRH problems. The program is active in Ethiopia Kenya Tanzania and Uganda. Major features of suggested comprehensive approaches are discussed in detail with examples from AMREFs work.
