Abstract

ABSTRACT Afield machine was assembled with components to top and grip sorghum stalks, and to cut them into 30-cm billets which were elevated into a trailer. The total and net energies of combined components harvesting billets at 8 t/h were 1.0 and 0.3 kW-h/t, respectively. Leaf stripping used 55% of the total energy. Harvested crop had 4% leaves, a 70% mass fraction of billets 30 to 40 cm long, a bulk density of 220 kg/m3, and a 49 angle of repose. A 16-m3 self-unloading forage wagon with beaters and controls successfully discharged harvested crop at 2 t/h to feed a juice-expression mill.
