Abstract
The ground state of atoms in an optical lattice is found using aGutzwiller approximation. In particular we examine systems withlarge numbers of atoms per site. The number squeezing in theground state is calculated in terms of lattice parameters. Theapproximation successfully describes the state of an arbitrarynumber of identical lattice sites at zero temperature, for boththe superfluid and Mott insulator phases.
