His books include Bargaining for Reality (1984), The Anthropology of Justice (1989), The Justice of Islam (2000), The Culture of Islam (2002), Law as Culture (2006), and Varieties of Muslim Experience (2008). His articles have appeared in The London Review of Books, The American Scholar, The American Interest, and The New York Times. He is currently completing two books relating to his work in the Arab world, Drawn from Memory and The Balance of Justice.
