Abstract

Interest in stone used for buildings, monuments, and works of art as an educational resource has increased in recent years. Many publications are now available for those seeking to compile geological information on such stone. Collections of building stone are also available for examination, although collections in the United States have unfortunately fallen into disfavor. Relevant literature includes regional studies of dimension stone, walking-tour guides, field-trip guides to quarries, lists of trade names, commercial publications, catalogs of museum collections, and books on art and architecture. Because of the availability of these sources of information and model guidebooks, this is an optimal time for those wishing to develop educational programs centered on stone used for buildings, monuments, and works of art.
