Abstract
In the UK there is continued pressure to redevelop contaminated sites. As part of a major initiative into technical aspects of relevant investigations and remediation/control, CIRIA (Construction Industry Research and Information Association) - with funding from UK industry and Department of the Environment - commissioned WS Atkins Environment to prepare a guide to safe working practices. The Guide was prepared principally for site conditions where the scale of contamination was modest - with possible hot spots - and where gross contamination would be addressed by specialist contractors with appropriate environmental controls. It is intended for use by a wide readership, ranging from general civil engineers to environmental scientists and is scheduled for publication during 1993.
