Abstract

A clinical practicum guide was developed to provide novice clinicians with a structural framework to facilitate independence in development of clinical competence throughout a semester. This study compared level of independence in clinical competence of a experimental group, who used the guide, to a control group. Level of independence was measured by supervisors' ratings of students and students's self-ratings. Statistical analysis of students' self-rating revealed a significantly higher level of independence in the experimental group. Supervisors' ratings also favored the experimental group. Both quantitative results and qualitative comments reflected a positive response regarding the clinical practicum guide.
