Abstract

A method for finding closed-form solutions corresponding to the normal modes of Kirchhoff systems with a modicum of symmetry has been investigated. This method can be particularly useful for the questions of degeneracy that arise when considering parallel imaging techniques, such as SENSE and SMASH in MRI. It is applicable to systems that include birdcage coils and birdcage-like coils, as well as planar coils with some symmetry. As an example, closed-form solutions for the normal mode frequencies of a three-ring birdcage coil have been obtained. These solutions have been tested against measurements made on an eight-element three-ring birdcage coil. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
