Abstract

Abstract INTRODUCTION The Global Positioning System (GPS) has been identified by many sections within the Surveying industry as a viable system of positioning. It is a 24 hour, all weather global positioning service established by the United States Department of Defence that is capable of various degrees of accuracy, ranging between the 100 metre level to the 1 to 3 metre level in real time, and sub centimetre in post survey mode. The attainable accuracies are dependant upon the type of GPS equipment used and the field and processing techniques adopted to minimise and reduce inherent errors in the system.
