Abstract

In this paper a new mechanism is proposed for the omission of radiation by charged particles in a gravitational field whereby the gravitational field is coupled directly to the radiation field of the charge via the principle of equivalence. This leads to a Larmor formula for the electromagnetic power emitted by a charge at rest (on the average) in a gravitational field, which can account for the spectral distribution and the total radiant energy emitted by quasars. This gravitational mechanism for the emission of electromagnetic radiation becomes more important than any other mechanism when the radius of the quasar is near its Schwarzschild radius.
