Abstract

We describe a high-resolution, focusing “gravity diffractometer” for ultracold neutrons with velocities around 4 m/s. The instrumental resolution for the relevant vertical neutron momentum component was measured to be about 1.5×10 −2, corresponding to an absolute energy resolution of 3 neV, in agreement with results of Monte-Carlo calculations. The instrument has been utilized to study with high precision neutron-optical phenomena like grating diffraction, mirror reflection, and the Fabry-Perot interference of ultracold neutrons.
