Abstract

This paper explores the consequences of using a computer model to simulate the formation of sand ripples. A set of simple rules form a decision procedure to test if a sand grain can be moved by a randomly varying force. The results are sufficiently realistic to suggest that the rules, which depend on the interaction of grains, bear some relation to the true physical processes at work.
