Abstract

In addition to the tradition of visiting onsen (hot springs), one of the major purposes of travel for leisure in Japan concerns the enjoyment of different cuisines. Such culinary tourism also involves the exploration and enjoyment of the variety found in food in relation to regional cultural variations in Japan, especially where visitors from the large cities travel to rural areas. Indeed, culinary tourism has been a major factor in the development of some regions. In this article, the pattern of and trends in culinary tourism are described and explained.
