Abstract

John of God is a Brazilian psychic healer who is attracting a large number of overseas followers. In the last decade, he was invited to conduct healing events in Germany, the US, New Zealand, Greece and Peru, among other countries. He has visited more than once some of these countries. In this article, I analyze the ways in which this new religious movement is being globalized, focusing Australia in particular. I show that there is a growing transnational community of followers living between the healing centre in Brazil and Australia. I argue that this transnational community has intensified the globalization of Spiritism, hitherto carried out mainly by Brazilian migrants. Finally, I analyze the recent establishment of an Australian branch of the Brazilian healing centre.
